Up-and-coming Cleveland rapper Freshie is making waves in the underground music scene. From opening up for artists such as Chief Keef and Lil Xan, to dropping new music videos frequently, Freshie is a name to be on the lookout for. Check out what he had to say.
MHD: To kick things off, tell us about Freshie? Where are you from? How long have you been making music? Etc.
FRESHIE: Freshie is dirty boy fresh. Dirty boy because I always do me, but I’m always Fresh! I’m a well known artist from Cleveland, OH with a growing fan base all over the US and overseas in Europe. I’ve been rapping and producing beats since I was in the second grade.
MHD: How did you start making music? Who were some of your early musical influences?
FRESHIE: My mom was a rapper so I naturally was around music and entertainment since a young age.
Musical influences: Three 6 Mafia, Snoop Dogg, Isley Brothers, R. Kelly, Monica, SWV, R&B artists from 90s, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Tyler The Creator, Gucci Mane, Chief Keef, Wiz Khalifa, Michael Jackson, and Bob Marley.
MHD: That’s a legendary list of artists right there. Most recently, we’ve had your song “Brady Bunch” on repeat. The production is also on-point. What is your creative process for writing lyrics and beat selection?
FRESHIE: I rarely write lol..I just sit and listen to beats, feel it out and I’ll naturally start rapping to it if I like it. It really just depends of the beat and my mood.
MHD: You recently received praise from Lil Xan, and even opened up for him at a super hype, sold out show. What was that experience like? Any memorable moments or can you let the people know what performing that concert was like?
FRESHIE: It was LIT! It was fun and my second time performing. I opened up for Chief Keef earlier this year. It was a good experience; I took my shirt off and crowd surfed! The most memorable moment was this girl crying for lil xan and I told him to go talk to her then she thanked me lol.
MHD: What things/necessities are a must when you’re in the studio?
FRESHIE: Water, weed, no lights, silence, snacks, beats, and sometimes liquor.
MHD: Who are some of your favorite artists and/or producers that you would like to work with in the future?
Some of my favorite producers that I would like to work with are: KennyBeats, MetroBoomin, Zaytoven, and SonnyDigital. I’ve worked with ChaseTheMoney and TrapMoneyBenny but I would like to do more with them.
MHD: Do you have any specific music goals that you would like to achieve, in let’s say the next 5 years?
FRESHIE: Not really, just trying to see where working hard takes me. I just want my team to be working and making money. And of course I want my family to be good.
MHD: What is one piece of advice that you’ve received in life that you can pass on? Or a gem that you can leave the readers with.
FRESHIE: “Are you living or are you existing?”
“Work hard, live easy!”
MHD: Any upcoming projects that we should be on the lookout for?
FRESHIE: Maybe..yes..no lol.
MHD: Where can people find you. Any @’s to follow? (Twitter, Soundcloud, etc.)
MHD: Any shout outs?
FRESHIE: My team, my family, my fans: Dirtyclub!
